Limitation of perception and responsiveness

Although all the details of a traffic situation are depicted in the eye (or affect another sensory organ), only a small part will be consciously perceived, depending on what you focus on. You can usually perceive and react to 2-3 details, danger signs or signals per second, and the speed must be adjusted according to the limited ability of perception and reaction. You should preferably avoid keeping your gaze on one particular point for too long, as your focal point will be too limited.

Improvement of perception and reaction

Things or events that are unusual or interesting attract your attention, making it easy to overlook more important details. Therefore, when you drive, you must always be ready to react. It's not just about speed, but also about your attention and control of the car. You must sharpen your interest in the details, danger signs and signals that are important to safety and that will help you anticipate what may happen in the next moment. A road-safe attitude and behavior is best developed through knowledge of one's own limitations and a healthy skepticism towards the reliability of what one immediately perceives in traffic. A road-safe attitude and behavior is strengthened when, as a counterweight to one's own limitations, one acquires a driving style that provides ample safety margin during the various manoeuvres.
